Here is the review of the debut album from The Execellos that I bought from the guys at Hemsby Rock n Roll Weekend.
This Rocks, make no mistake about it, this is hard, dirty and rockin, they literally stormed Hemsby late on the Saturday afternoon. What suprises me is that the album manages to capture the pure energy of the live set not all bands manage that.
I know that there are some 45's available prior to this but this is the first CD album by the band.
The album kicks off with a cover, one of only five out of the 15 tracks, I Got Love If you Want It, we are probably more familiar with the Warren Smith rockabilly bopper, but here we get a bluesier bopper complete with harmonica & heavy guitars and a superb bass chugging along.
Catfish rattles along nicely and You Dont Care grinds out the guitar rhythms. Jekyll & Hyde is just great, I loved the original version but singer Paul Sheahan has revisited it here, giving a muffled vocal style, harmonica backing and shakes everything out of the vocal he can.
Down The Line is an original song but its written in a Johnny Cash style, that's Johnny Cash gone blues of course, what you get is a rockabilly tune with blues overtones very effective.
Black Betty is a cover many will recognise but not from the rockin scene, being a Leadbelly song but was a big commecial hit for Ram Jam, I like The Excellos version a lot more.
Other highlights on here are Jump, which has received some national radio play over here and is a killer track. Kasbah and Scratch n Sniff are both instrumentals and Suzi Q and Shake Your Hips are covered, both considered classics of the genre and given fine treatment here.
This CD is contains some great stuff guaranteed to fill dance floors in clubs and it has been rattling my car windows for about a week now!
I bought the album from the band and so have a link to their MySpace page, (check it out for samples) but all the top rockin dealers are selling it now.
